What to Expect During Your First Massage Appointment
If you've never had a massage before, it's completely normal to feel a little unsure about what to expect.
In fact, many of my first time clients tell me they were nervous before their appointment. They weren't sure what to wear, whether they were supposed to talk during the session, or if they would feel awkward being on the massage table.
The good news is that first appointments are usually much easier and more comfortable than people imagine.
Before Your Appointment:
When you arrive, we'll spend a few minutes talking about what brings you in.
Maybe you're dealing with neck and shoulder tension from sitting at a desk all day. Maybe you've been having headaches, low back pain, trouble sleeping, or you're simply feeling stressed and overwhelmed.
We'll talk about what you're hoping to get out of the session, any areas you'd like me to focus on, and anything I should know about your health history. This helps me tailor the massage to your specific needs.
There's really no special preparation required. Just arrive a few minutes early so you don't feel rushed.
What Should I Wear?
Wear whatever you normally wear.
During the massage, you'll undress to your level of comfort and get underneath the sheet and blanket. Some people leave underwear on, while others don't. Either choice is completely fine.
I'll step out of the room while you get settled, and you'll remain covered throughout the session except for the area I'm actively working on.
What If I'm Nervous?
You're probably not as nervous as some of the people I've worked with over the years.
I've had clients apologize because they didn't know what to do, worried they wouldn't be able to relax, or concerned that they might somehow be a "difficult" client.
I promise you're not.
You don't have to know anything about massage before you come in. You don't need to be flexible. You don't need to be relaxed before the session starts.
That's my job.
Do I Have to Talk During the Massage?
Not unless you want to.
Some clients enjoy talking during their appointment. Others close their eyes and enjoy the quiet. Many do a little of both.
I tend to follow your lead. If you'd like to chat, that's fine. If you'd rather enjoy an hour without having to make conversation or answer questions, that's perfectly fine too.
How Much Pressure Should I Ask For?
The pressure should feel productive, not miserable.
A lot of people assume deeper is always better, but that's not necessarily true. The best pressure is the pressure that allows your body to relax while still addressing the areas that need attention.
If something feels too intense, let me know. If you'd like more pressure, let me know that too.
You won't hurt my feelings, and I won't take it personally.
What Happens After the Massage?
Most people leave feeling looser, calmer, and more aware of how much tension they were carrying around.
Depending on the type of work we do, you might feel a little sore later that day or the next morning, similar to how you might feel after a workout.
I usually recommend drinking some water, moving around a little, and paying attention to how your body feels over the next day or two.
A Final Thought
If you've been thinking about scheduling a massage but keep putting it off because you're nervous, that's completely understandable.
Almost every long-term client I have was a first-time client at some point.
My goal is simply to create a comfortable environment where you can relax, let go of some stress, and leave feeling better than when you arrived.
